Thanks for visiting my new fancy website. I finally graduated from "webpage" to "website" and it feels much more luxurious. Plus I got rid of those "must have" body photos from the 90's.
I am not sure what this section is, what it is I am supposed to talk to you about. I mean, I should talk about the perils of global warming and my outrage about the war and sincere hope for a future where Lord Fauntleroy is not running things, but there are people who do that so much more articulately than me.
So here's my thought for the week. I took my three-year-old son to see "Dumbo" at the El Capitan in Hollywood last week and even though he was terrified during the live and blaringly loud, pre-show, organ numbers, we both learned something that afternoon. He learned that the best thing to do when noise is too loud is to bury yourself in velvet curtains, or between mommy's legs when no curtains are available. And I got the most unexpected, corny, and yet apt little life lesson from Dumbo's friend, that circus mouse with the top hat, TImothy.
Dumbo is learning to fly and keeps tripping on his big, stupid ears and Timothy is trying everything to encourage his friend and he says, in that tiny, cartoon mouse voice, Victoria Jackson with a mouthful of helium, “Come on Dumbo, the thing that takes you down will bring you up!” And with that, Dumbo starts to flap his disproportionate ears like wings and fly.
I have heard that sentence in my head at least once a day since then. So here’s what makes me not as hip as my font, I am starting to think that animated cheerleader has a point. Maybe the very setbacks, mishaps, and disappointments that bring me to my knees are the very experiences that will take me up in some way I can’t yet appreciate. Maybe even in, dare I write this, a spiritual sense.
Oh shit, I was supposed to show you how funny I am here. Oh cock and balls; now I’ve really blown it.
